A Desire to Do More!

Updated: 1 day ago

I was sitting in the car waiting for  one of my daughter’s, to come out of the gas station while I was filling up the tank. As she walked out of the store, a homeless man approached her and asked for some change to get something to eat. I watched as she went back into the store and came out with what appeared to be a bag of food, which she handed to him. He was so happy and expressed his gratitude several times.

When she got in the car, she told me the man was very sweet and that she had bought him two hotdogs, a bag of chips, and a bottle of water.

My kids and I had occasionally bought food for the homeless or given them a few dollars when they asked, but this moment really stuck with me. I had been thinking about how I could make a difference and had a strong desire to help the homeless community but didn't know where to start.

As my birthday was approaching, my daughters and some coworkers asked me what I wanted to do to celebrate my special day. I told them that this year, instead of going out to eat and receiving gifts, I wanted to feed the homeless. I asked each of them to donate $25 to help me accomplish my goal, and they did. On August 20, 2022, with the help of my daughters and a few volunteers, we spent the day cooking spaghetti and delivering 50 hot meals to the homeless. It was such a blessing to see the smiles on their faces, but I wanted to do more.

When we got home, I told my daughters Samon, Tae, and Victoria I wanted to start feeding the homeless every month. They were overjoyed, and I could hear the compassion and excitement in their voices. This was the beginning of Food and the Word Outreach Ministry. We started out serving 50 hot meals every third Saturday, but soon increased to 100 because we would run out of food quickly.

Desiring to do more, on August 19, 2023, for our one-year anniversary, we served 125 pulled pork sandwiches with chips and drinks. We also passed out clothes and shoes to those in need. With the help of generous donors, we began going out every second and fourth Saturday, to meet a greater need. As the winter months approached, we started looking for ways to help keep the homeless warm, so we did a blanket drive and collected over 80 blankets. On January 14, 2024, we served over 160 warm bowls of soup and gave out blankets, gloves, jackets, and shoes with the help of selfless volunteers and Holmes High School ROTC Alumni.

On February 14, 2024, my daughter Sa’mon got married and moved to the Dallas area. Seeing such a great need in the underserved homeless community there, we expanded to the Dallas area. On Memorial Day, May 27, 2024, Food and the Word Outreach Ministry launched in Dallas, headed by the Taylors. We thank God for the mission He has placed in our hands and are looking to do more.
